چکیده

We use a χ analysis on our spoken dialogue tutoring corpus to investigate dependencies between uncertain student answers and 9 dialogue acts the human tutor uses in his response to these answers. Our results show significant dependencies between the tutor’s use of some dialogue acts and the uncertainty expressed in the prior student answer, even after factoring out the answer’s (in)correctness. Identification and analysis of these dependencies is part of our empirical approach to developing an adaptive version of our spoken dialogue tutoring system that responds to student affective states as well as to student correctness.

Benefits and challenges of real-time uncertainty detection and adaptation in a spoken dialogue computer tutor

We evaluate the performance of a spoken dialogue system that provides substantive dynamic responses to automatically detected user affective states. We then present a detailed system error analysis that reveals challenges for real-time affect detection and adaptation. This research is situated in the tutoring domain, where the user is a student and the spoken dialogue system is a tutor. Our ada...

Towards Improving (Meta)cognition by Adapting to Student Uncertainty in Tutorial Dialogue

We hypothesize that enhancing computer tutors to respond to student uncertainty over and above correctness is one method for increasing both student learning and self-monitoring abilities. We test this hypothesis using spoken data from both wizarded and fully-automated versions of a spoken tutorial dialogue system, where tutor responses to uncertain and/or incorrect student answers were manipul...

Improving (Meta)Cognitive Tutoring by Detecting and Responding to Uncertainty

We hypothesize that enhancing computer tutors to respond to student uncertainty over and above correctness is one method for increasing both student learning and self-monitoring abilities. We explore this hypothesis using data from an experiment with a wizarded spoken tutorial dialogue system, where tutor responses to uncertain and/or incorrect student answers were manipulated. Our results sugg...

Designing and evaluating a wizarded uncertainty-adaptive spoken dialogue tutoring system

We describe the design and evaluation of two different dynamic student uncertainty adaptations in wizarded versions of a spoken dialogue tutoring system. The two adaptive systems adapt to each student turn based on its uncertainty, after an unseen human “wizard” performs speech recognition and natural language understanding and annotates the turn for uncertainty. The design of our two uncertain...

Adapting to Personality Over Time: Examining the Effectiveness of Dialogue Policy Progressions in Task-Oriented Interaction

This paper explores dialogue adaptation over repeated interactions within a taskoriented human tutorial dialogue corpus. We hypothesize that over the course of four tutorial dialogue sessions, tutors adapt their strategies based on the personality of the student, and in particular to student introversion or extraversion. We model changes in strategy over time and use them to predict how effecti...
